Sawyer
devastation
Sawyer has Autism.
daily challenges
Sawyer is a runner, and when he gets outside on his own, there is a fear he can get hurt
Need for almost constant Sensory input
Crave opportunities for movement and activity
Toys, games, and tools to help focus
Mom cannot leave him unattended, but also works form home, so it’s a challenging balance
design solutions
Aesthetic is calming shades of Blues & Greens
Placed locks on doors at a height he cannot reach to prevent him form getting outside on his own
Installed a Dutch door with the bottom portion staying closed to keep him inside his room, but the top of the door opens so mom has clear visibility from her new home office, now situated beside Sawyer’s play room
Indoor swing allows rocking (calming) motion
Large sensory wall gives him tactile input with textures that he craves
Chew toys for Oral sensory input
Canoe, weighted blankets and vibrating pillow provides the sensation of positive pressure on his skin, like a hug
Large Crash pad gives him a way to expert energy safely
Ceiling mounted TV allows him to watch movies, play educational games with no risk that he can pull it off the wall and hurt himself
impact
Comfort: Sawyer’s new room gave him a safe, comfortable space to play
Peace of Mind: Mom, dad, and Grandparents can all breathe easier in knowing that he has a safe place of his own where he cannot get out and run away.
